Of course, you can easily explore the entire island on foot – or hop on e-taxis or our popular island train. The elevator takes you high up to the green Oberland. You don’t have to worry about your luggage, our service manager will take care of that for you if you wish!
Unlike many other islands, Helgoland does not lie on a contour line. To advance from the Unterland with its idyllic harbor district to the Oberland, the green heart of the island, you have two options: If you like it sporty, take one of the three stairs with up to 260 steps. However, the faster and at the same time more comfortable means of transport is undoubtedly the elevator on Helgoland, which takes guests up (and back) in no time at all for a small fee. Coming as a group? Thanks to favorable rates, that’s no problem! For operating hours, see the notice on site.
The municipality of Helgoland maintains a ferry service between the main island of Helgoland and the dune. The dune ferry departs from the landing stage or from the small northeast harbor, depending on the weather (please note the current notices).

On Helgoland it is forbidden to drive your own motor vehicle, also bicycles cannot be used on the island (§50 StVO). But that doesn’t matter, because all the sights on the island are easily accessible on foot. And if you prefer a more comfortable means of transportation, you can call an electric cab, which are on standby all year round.
Island tours happen not only around, but also on Helgoland: with the island train you start your round trip in the Unterland during the approximately 40-minute Unterland trip, the Börte-Bahn takes you past all the hot sports worth seeing on the high seas island. At the same time, you will learn more about the island’s history, the various institutions on the island and even how seawater is turned into drinking water. The tour departs from the landing stage and the southern harbor during the summer season. Fancy a shopping tour afterwards? The tours end in the center and some even offer the possibility to get off at the south harbor.
While you’re at it, you can also plan your next walk if you’re staying longer on the island.
