Helgoland offers more than a typical island: in addition to a wide view of the mighty North Sea and a fine sandy beach, Helgoland is the scene of unique natural spectacles. When seals give birth to their babies, seabirds nest in their thousands high on the rocks and their young birds then plunge spectacularly into the depths for their first attempts at flight, a visit to the island is guaranteed to be remembered.

Helgoland is a unique natural setting for travelers, animal and nature lovers – at any time of the year! Thus, in the winter months, an incomparable nature experience takes place that you are guaranteed not to see on the mainland: On Helgoland’s dune, grey seals cast their pups. The animals have been living here in peaceful coexistence with the islanders for decades and have lost their fear of contact due to a hunting ban in the seventies. Vor allem in den Jahreszeiten Frühjahr und Herbst wird die Nordsee-Insel zum Mekka für Vogelliebhaber. Allerlei Seevögel nisten auf der Hochseeinsel: Basstölpel und Trottellummen brüten auf dem Lummenfelsen, dem kleinsten Naturschutzgebiet Schleswig-Holsteins und einem der kleinsten Naturschutzgebiete Deutschlands. In June, on the so-called guillemot days, guests watch the still flightless young guillemots jump from the rock into the sea. Without a doubt, the guillemot jump is one of the most exciting nature experiences on Helgoland.

Helgoland bietet im Übrigen aber auch eine außergewöhnliche Vegetation – darunter einige Wildformen bekannter Kulturpflanzen wie der Klippenkohl und die wilde Rübe. Auch eher in südlicheren Gebieten zu erwartende Pflanzen wie die Feige, Loorbeere und Maulbeere werden auf Helgoland angebaut. Einen Ausflug allemal wert ist außerdem die Lange Anna – ein imposanter Brandungspfeiler aus Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk und Kreide. Die Düne, die auch weniger vom Tagestourismus geprägt ist, beheimatet den weltweit einmaligen roten Feuerstein.
Die Trottellumme ist der Charaktervogel Helgolands. Gut 2000 Trottellummen-Paare brüten auf Helgoland, die meisten auf dem Lummenfelsen. Ab Mitte April besetzen die Lummen ihre angestammten Brutplätze auf dem Felsen. Die Jungen werden 20 bis 25 Tage lang von ihren Eltern mit Kleinfischen gefüttert. Noch im Daunenkleid und flugunfähig verlassen sie mit einem Sprung in die Tiefe den Felsen und landen im Wasser. Dieser „Lummensprung“, der in der Abenddämmerung von Anfang Juni bis Juli beobachtet werden kann, ist ein atemberaubendes Naturschauspiel.
Die Dreizehenmöwe baut auf kleinen Felsvorsprüngen Nester aus Tang, Algen und Grashalmen. Die Jungvögel bleiben bis Ende August auf den engen Nistplätzen. They leave in September to winter on the North Atlantic.
The razorbill resembles the guillemot in appearance and lifestyle. However, its black plumage is shinier and its broad bill, crisscrossed with white bands and bulges, appears chunkier. Breeding pairs have always existed in small numbers on Heligoland.
The fulmar, seabird of the year 2022, has been native to Helgoland since 1972. It is a close relative of the albatross. From the cliff walk, old birds and young rearing can be easily observed.

The weather on Helgoland is varied: Helgoland’s high seas climate and the North Sea warmed by the Gulf Stream bring ideal conditions for swimming in the sea on the beach of the dune in summer. However, storms with strong winds can occur on the high seas, especially in winter, in an atmosphere that must be experienced once.
Especially for allergy sufferers, Helgoland is a relaxing vacation spot due to the non-existent pollen flight. The pure and iodine-rich air makes Helgoland -combined with the atmospheric North Sea backdrop- a special health resort, the likes of which you will not find on the mainland.
