Helgoland during the winter
A winter fairy tale on red rock

Those who travel to Helgoland in winter experience the high seas island from a completely different perspective. It has become quiet in the streets, where in summer about 2500 day visitors and numerous vacation guests bustle daily. Now is the time to look at lovingly decorated shop windows in peace and quiet, to get advice on buying clothes and jewelry, or to enjoy a bunker tour to find out more about the history of Helgoland.

In winter, the journey is particularly stress-free: only a few holidaymakers are on board and therefore you can enjoy the pleasant tranquility on the ship of the Cassen Eils shipping company even before arrival. The crossing with the only winter ferry connection from Cuxhaven with MS “Helgoland” takes a good two and a half hours.

Heligoland, you quiet winter idyll

Quiet returns to the Guillemot Rock during the winter months. Gannets and guillemots have raised their offspring here and now leave empty nests behind. The landmark of the island of Helgoland, the Lange Anna, now also has to withstand the one or other strong winter storm. Here, on the Klippenrandweg in the Oberland, it is especially worthwhile to pause, take a deep breath and feel the pure, cool North Sea air.

This is particularly rich in iodine and oxygen and frees the airways. And just let your eyes wander over the island, especially at dawn and dusk simply wonderful!

Robben-Babys im Winter

Unusual insights into the nursery of the seals can be had on Helgoland between November and January. Then baby grey seals are born on the dune. As long as they are so young, the cute beady-eyed grey seals lie unable to swim on the dune’s northern beach. Meanwhile, the mothers go in search of food. It’s important now, even more so than in summer, to keep your distance so that mothers and pups get the rest they need. Specially constructed boardwalks and viewing platforms nevertheless allow nature lovers a good view of the animals without disturbing them unnecessarily. The dune ferry also brings guests to the dune in winter. The last ferry then departs at 4 p.m. back to the island. After that, the dune belongs to the animals alone again.

Sweating against winter blues

As expected, it is much too cold for swimming in the sea in winter. Those who are drawn to the water even in the winter months should visit the “mare frisicum – SPA HELGOLAND” – our island swimming pool with seawater. The 38 square meter indoor pool, equipped with a bubbling geyser, is connected by a corridor with the 230 square meter outdoor pool and is open all year round. A generously designed sauna area attracts with Finnish sauna, Sanarium®, brine steam bath and relaxation rooms with a unique view. A special highlight awaits guests on the roof of the building: a whirlpool filled with over 30 degrees of warm seawater with a view of the sea, the bathing dune and the red rock.

Note: From the beginning of November to mid-December, the seawater swimming pool is usually not open due to the annual revision period.
